Pedro Acosta Criticizes Catalan MotoGP Restart Decisions After Chaotic Race Drama

 

Pedro Acosta openly criticized race officials following one of the most chaotic weekends of the 2026 MotoGP season at the Catalan Grand Prix. The young KTM rider expressed frustration over the decision to restart the race multiple times after a series of dangerous crashes left several riders injured and sparked major safety concerns throughout the paddock.

The controversy began during the main race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya when Acosta, who had been leading comfortably, suddenly suffered a technical failure on his KTM machine. The unexpected slowdown occurred between Turns 9 and 10, leaving little time for trailing riders to react. Alex Marquez, who was following closely behind, collided heavily with Acosta’s bike in a frightening high-speed accident that immediately forced race officials to display the red flag. 

The impact launched Marquez off the circuit and sent debris flying across the track. Several riders, including Fabio Di Giannantonio and Raul Fernandez, were also affected by the incident. Medical teams rushed to the scene while race organizers suspended the Grand Prix for emergency intervention. Reports later confirmed that Marquez was conscious but required hospital treatment for fractures and additional medical examinations. 

Despite the severity of the crash, race officials decided to restart the event. However, the drama escalated only moments later when another major collision occurred at Turn 1 during the restart procedure. Johann Zarco became involved in a three-rider crash alongside Francesco Bagnaia and Luca Marini, resulting in a second red flag of the afternoon. 

Following the race, Acosta did not hide his disappointment with the way the situation had been handled. The Spanish rider argued that rider safety should always take priority over entertainment value. He suggested that continuing the event after two major accidents created unnecessary risks for competitors and described the decision-making process as irresponsible. According to Acosta, the paddock reacted as though nothing serious had happened, despite multiple riders being sent to hospital. 

Acosta also explained the mechanical issue that triggered the original crash. He revealed that his KTM suddenly lost electrical power, causing the throttle to stop responding completely. The abrupt failure threw him forward on the bike and created a dangerous situation for riders approaching at full speed behind him. 

The emotional toll of the chaotic race weekend was evident across the MotoGP community. Several riders later admitted that restarting the Grand Prix three times felt excessive given the circumstances. Concerns about rider welfare quickly became one of the biggest talking points after the event, with fans and analysts debating whether stricter safety protocols should be introduced in future races. 

Even with the controversy overshadowing the event, the race eventually resumed in shortened form. Fabio Di Giannantonio ultimately claimed victory in the heavily interrupted Catalan Grand Prix after surviving the earlier incidents and late-race chaos. 

The dramatic events in Barcelona have intensified discussions surrounding MotoGP safety regulations, restart policies, and communication between riders and race control. Acosta’s outspoken comments have since gained widespread attention across the motorsport world, highlighting growing concerns about balancing rider protection with the pressure to keep races running under extreme circumstances.
