LCR Team Boss Shares Johann Zarco Injury Update After Dramatic Catalunya MotoGP Restart Crash

Johann Zarco suffered a frightening accident during the restarted 2026 Catalan MotoGP, prompting immediate medical attention and another red flag at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. According to Lucio Cecchinello, the French rider escaped major upper-body injuries but is still experiencing significant pain around his left leg and femur area.

The chaos unfolded shortly after the race resumed following an earlier stoppage caused by a high-speed collision involving Pedro Acosta and Alex Marquez. During the restart, Zarco became entangled in an opening-corner incident with Luca Marini and Francesco Bagnaia at Turn 1, leading to another serious crash that forced race officials to halt proceedings once again.

Speaking after the incident, Cecchinello confirmed that Zarco had been transported to a nearby hospital for scans and further medical evaluation. Early assessments indicated no concussion or major damage to his upper body, feet, or ankles. However, doctors remained concerned about pain located near the rider’s thigh and knee.

Despite the dramatic ending, Zarco had shown impressive pace throughout the Catalunya weekend. The LCR Honda rider qualified fifth, repeated the result in the sprint race, and was running inside the top six before the first red flag interrupted the Grand Prix. Cecchinello described the weekend as one of the team’s strongest performances of the season before the crash abruptly ended their momentum.

Additional reports later revealed that Zarco suffered ligament damage around the knee along with a minor fracture near the fibula in his left ankle. Although the injuries were painful, the Frenchman reassured fans that the situation was “more scary than serious.” He remained under medical observation overnight before planning to return to France for specialist consultations.

The multiple red-flag incidents during the Catalan MotoGP triggered widespread discussion among fans and riders regarding race safety and restart procedures. Several members of the MotoGP community questioned whether the race should have continued after the initial major accident.
