Catalan MotoGP Stopped Twice After Massive Multi-Bike Crashes in Barcelona

Catalan GP 2026

The 2026 Catalan Grand Prix turned into one of the most dramatic MotoGP races in recent memory after two separate red-flag incidents interrupted the action at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

What began as a thrilling battle for victory quickly escalated into chaos following a violent multi-rider collision involving Pedro Acosta and Alex Marquez. Acosta had been leading the race comfortably before his KTM reportedly suffered a sudden technical problem on the straight. Marquez, riding closely behind, was unable to avoid contact and slammed into the rear of Acosta’s motorcycle at high speed.

The impact launched Marquez off his bike and scattered debris across the circuit, forcing race officials to wave the red flag immediately. Fabio Di Giannantonio and several nearby riders were also caught up in the aftermath, although most escaped without serious injury. Medical teams responded quickly as Marquez was transported to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. Reports later confirmed that the Spanish rider remained conscious after the frightening crash.

After a lengthy delay and track cleanup, the race restarted — but the drama was far from over.

Only a short time after the second start, another heavy collision involving Johann Zarco, Francesco Bagnaia, and Luca Marini caused officials to suspend the race once again. Zarco became trapped in the incident and required medical attention before being taken to the circuit medical center.

The repeated stoppages created confusion throughout the paddock, with teams forced to rapidly adjust strategies and tire selections ahead of a shortened final sprint to the finish.

Despite the unpredictable conditions, Fabio Di Giannantonio remained calm under pressure and eventually emerged victorious after overtaking Pedro Acosta in the closing stages. Joan Mir secured second place, while Fermin Aldeguer completed the podium after a consistent ride.

The Catalan GP will likely be remembered less for the final standings and more for the extraordinary sequence of crashes, red flags, and survival stories that unfolded throughout an unforgettable afternoon in Barcelona.
