Catalan MotoGP Result Changed After Multiple Penalties Shake Up Final Standings

Catalan MotoGP 2026

The final classification of the 2026 Catalan MotoGP changed dramatically after race officials handed out six separate penalties following the chaotic Barcelona event.

More than an hour after the checkered flag, MotoGP stewards revised the official results due to a combination of tyre-pressure violations and riding infractions. Five riders received sanctions for failing to comply with minimum tyre-pressure regulations, while another penalty was issued for causing a collision during the race.

One of the biggest consequences affected Joan Mir, who originally crossed the line in second place for Honda. After receiving a 16-second penalty related to illegal tyre pressure, Mir dropped far down the classification and lost what would have been a major podium result.

The revised standings promoted Gresini Racing rider Fermin Aldeguer into second position, while Ducati factory star Francesco Bagnaia inherited third place. Fabio Di Giannantonio remained the official race winner after delivering an impressive performance throughout the interrupted Catalunya Grand Prix.

Additional tyre-pressure penalties were also given to Alex Rins, Jack Miller, Toprak Razgatlioglu, and Raul Fernandez. Their punishments reshuffled several positions inside the top 15 and significantly altered the championship points distribution after the race.

Another controversial moment involved Ai Ogura, who was penalized for causing contact with Pedro Acosta late in the race. The incident contributed to Acosta crashing out despite leading large portions of the event and fighting for a potential first MotoGP victory.

The Catalunya Grand Prix already featured enormous drama before the penalties were announced. The race had been stopped twice with red flags after major crashes involving Alex Marquez, Johann Zarco, and several other riders. Multiple restarts forced teams to repeatedly adjust tyre strategies under extremely difficult conditions.

Fabio Quartararo later admitted that the unusual race circumstances and repeated restarts changed grip conditions on the circuit, helping some riders adapt better than others during the shortened final sprint.

The revised Barcelona result also affected the MotoGP championship standings. Marco Bezzecchi extended his lead at the top of the standings, while Di Giannantonio moved closer to the title fight after securing his first premier-class victory since 2023.
