KTM star Pedro Acosta says his Italian MotoGP duel with Marc Marquez provided valuable lessons in race strategy, tyre management, and riding technique
Pedro Acosta admitted that he gained valuable knowledge after an intense battle with Marc Marquez during the 2026 Italian MotoGP at Mugello. The young KTM rider described the duel as an important learning experience that helped him better understand race strategy and tyre management at the highest level of MotoGP.
During the race, Acosta spent several laps directly behind Marquez as the two Spaniards fought for a position inside the top four. Although he attempted several overtaking moves, Acosta found it difficult to get past the experienced Ducati rider, who defended his position with exceptional racecraft and tactical awareness.
Acosta explained that he intentionally remained behind Marquez for several laps in order to study how the multiple-time world champion managed his tyres and approached the race strategically. According to the KTM rider, following a competitor of Marquez’s caliber provides insights that cannot be obtained solely through data analysis or simulation work.
The 22-year-old also focused on understanding the racing lines Marquez used in several sections of the Mugello circuit. He closely observed how the Ducati Lenovo Team rider maintained his pace while preserving tyre performance for the latter stages of the Grand Prix. Acosta considered these observations particularly valuable, given KTM’s previous struggles with tyre management.
Acosta noted that Marquez’s riding style has evolved since joining Ducati. While the Spaniard was once known for his highly aggressive braking technique, Acosta believes he now rides in a smoother and more controlled manner. In his opinion, this approach allows Marquez to remain competitive despite still recovering from physical injuries.
The battle between the two Spanish riders became one of the highlights of the Italian MotoGP weekend. They exchanged positions several times, particularly along Mugello’s long main straight. Despite the intensity of the contest, both riders managed to keep the fight clean and respectful without any dangerous incidents.
After eventually overtaking Marquez, Acosta admitted that the achievement boosted his confidence. Competing directly against one of the most successful riders in MotoGP history and coming out ahead provided an important milestone in his development as a future championship contender.
On the other side of the battle, Marquez acknowledged that Acosta applied constant pressure throughout the race. However, the Ducati rider felt he was able to remain competitive thanks in part to the strengths of his motorcycle compared with the KTM package. Marquez also admitted that he is not yet back to full physical fitness but was determined to defend his position for as long as possible.
The seven-time MotoGP World Champion also praised Acosta’s talent, describing the young KTM rider as an exceptional competitor with the potential to become a future world champion if he eventually receives a more competitive motorcycle.
Their rivalry attracted additional attention because Acosta has been linked with a possible move to the Ducati factory team for the 2027 season, where he could potentially become Marquez’s teammate. As a result, their Mugello battle has been viewed as an early glimpse of what could become a major rivalry within Ducati in the future.
The 2026 Italian MotoGP not only delivered an exciting fight for positions but also highlighted the learning process of one of MotoGP’s brightest young talents. For Pedro Acosta, racing against Marc Marquez at Mugello provided valuable lessons that could play a significant role in his future pursuit of a MotoGP world championship.
