The 2021 MotoGP World Champion Opens Up About His Frustration After a Difficult Italian Grand Prix as Yamaha Continues to Search for Performance Gains.
Fabio Quartararo has openly expressed his frustration following a difficult weekend at the 2026 Italian Grand Prix in Mugello. The Yamaha rider acknowledged that his motivation is beginning to fade as the Japanese manufacturer continues to struggle for competitiveness in MotoGP.
During Sunday’s main race, the 2021 MotoGP World Champion finished well down the order and was the last Yamaha rider to cross the finish line. The disappointing result further highlighted the performance challenges that Yamaha has faced throughout the season.
Quartararo explained that he initially tried to push harder during the race in an effort to improve his position. However, once he realized he was already riding at the limit of the bike’s capabilities, he decided it was not worth taking unnecessary risks for a minimal points gain.
According to the French rider, there was little value in risking a crash simply to fight for a single championship point. As a result, he chose to ease his pace and focus on bringing the bike home safely.
Deep Frustration After a Difficult Weekend
The Yamaha rider did not hide his disappointment with the outcome of the Mugello weekend. He felt that the work completed by the team throughout the event failed to deliver the improvements they had hoped for.
Quartararo admitted that he was relieved when the Italian Grand Prix weekend finally came to an end. For him, it was one of the most frustrating rounds of the 2026 season, as he struggled to identify any positive aspects that could provide confidence for future races.
Yamaha’s Momentum Has Disappeared
Only a few weeks earlier, Quartararo had shown signs of renewed competitiveness with Yamaha, delivering encouraging performances at Le Mans. However, that momentum quickly disappeared following two consecutive disappointing weekends in Catalunya and Mugello.
Those results have once again raised questions about Yamaha’s ability to consistently challenge its main rivals in MotoGP. As the brand’s leading rider, Quartararo appears increasingly frustrated by the limitations of the current M1 package.
Honda Rumors Continue to Grow
Amid Yamaha’s ongoing difficulties, speculation regarding Quartararo’s future has intensified. Reports suggest that the Frenchman may have reached an agreement to join Honda next season, although neither party has officially confirmed the rumors.
When asked about his current mindset, Quartararo admitted that his motivation is at one of its lowest points. Nevertheless, he remains hopeful that his outlook could improve once the championship moves to circuits that better suit Yamaha’s strengths.
Looking Ahead to Hungary
Following the disappointment of Mugello, Quartararo is now turning his attention to the next MotoGP round at Balaton Park in Hungary. The upcoming race presents an opportunity for both the rider and Yamaha to regain confidence after several challenging weekends.
For Yamaha, the Hungarian Grand Prix will be an important chance to demonstrate that meaningful progress is still possible. For Quartararo, it could serve as the first step toward rediscovering the motivation and confidence that have been missing in recent races.
