Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP has finally explained the reason behind the tyre pressure penalties received by both of its riders after the 2026 Catalan MotoGP. Jack Miller and Toprak Razgatlioglu were among five riders handed 16-second time penalties for running tyre pressures below the minimum limit set by MotoGP regulations.
In the dramatic race, tyre pressure rules became one of the main talking points. Normally, every rider must keep tyre pressure above the minimum threshold for at least 60 percent of the Grand Prix distance. However, because the Catalan race was restarted and shortened to only 12 laps instead of the original 24, the requirement was reduced to 30 percent, similar to Sprint Race regulations.
Despite the adjusted rules, several riders still failed to meet the requirements. Alongside the Pramac Yamaha duo, Joan Mir, Raul Fernandez, and Alex Rins also received the same penalty. Meanwhile, Francesco Bagnaia avoided punishment after officials discovered a leak in his wheel rim.
Pramac team manager Gino Borsoi revealed that the two race restarts created major difficulties for engineers when calculating the ideal tyre pressure before the start. According to him, the shortened race distance prevented the tyres from reaching their optimal operating temperature.
Borsoi also explained that race conditions heavily influence tyre pressure levels. When a rider is running alone on track, tyre pressure behaves differently compared to riding in a group behind other competitors. This factor made tyre pressure calculations extremely complicated for the technical staff.
He emphasized that starting the race with excessively high tyre pressure might help avoid penalties, but it could negatively affect both bike performance and rider safety. On the other hand, running pressure too low almost guarantees a post-race sanction.
As a result of the penalties, Jack Miller dropped to 15th place, while Toprak Razgatlioglu finished in 16th position. Despite losing 16 seconds, both riders only lost one position in the final results of the 2026 Catalan MotoGP.
