Quartararo Secures Hat-Trick Pole Position and Shatters Silverstone Record at British MotoGP Qualifying
Silverstone, UK – In a display of sheer dominance and exceptional skill, Fabio Quartararo of Yamaha Factory Racing claimed his third consecutive pole position of the MotoGP season at the British Grand Prix, simultaneously setting a new lap record at the iconic Silverstone Circuit. This remarkable achievement solidified his status as a front-runner and set the stage for what promises to be an enthralling race day. The French rider's blistering pace left his competitors, including the formidable Marc Marquez, scrambling to keep up, ultimately relegating the Ducati rider to the second row of the grid.
Quartararo's pole position hat-trick marks a significant milestone in his career, a feat he hadn't achieved since his triumphant 2021 premier class championship season. Each of these three consecutive poles has also come with the added distinction of breaking existing track records, showcasing his incredible consistency and raw speed. His approach to the Q2 session was strategic and clinical. He patiently waited for all other riders to exit the pit lane at the start of Q2, then, coming from behind, he unleashed a stunning lap time of 1:58.506. This initial benchmark was quickly eclipsed by Marc Marquez, who, still on his first set of tires, pushed even harder to register a 1:57.914, briefly taking the provisional pole.
As riders returned to the pits for fresh tires, "El Diablo," as Quartararo is known, once again positioned himself at the tail end of the field. This time, however, he faced intense pressure from the likes of Alex Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia, both determined to challenge for the top spot. With the clock winding down to zero, Quartararo delivered a breathtaking final lap, shattering the existing record with an astonishing 1:57.233. This exceptional effort not only secured him pole position but also established a new benchmark for the fastest lap ever recorded at Silverstone, leaving Alex Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia to complete the front row.
Marc Marquez, despite his earlier strong showing, found himself in a less familiar position, qualifying fourth. This marked his worst starting grid position of the season, a result partly influenced by an unfortunate yellow flag incident caused by Johann Zarco's crash. The yellow flags prevented Marquez from improving his lap time during his final push. Interestingly, Marquez was the only rider among the top four to change both his front and rear tires during the session, a strategic decision that may have influenced his final result.
Joining Marc Marquez on the second row will be Fermin Aldeguer, who put in a commendable performance, and Jack Miller, who will start from sixth position on his Pramac Yamaha. The third row will feature Fabio Di Giannantonio, Luca Marini (who impressively made his way through Q1), and Johann Zarco, who despite his crash, still managed to secure a spot on the third row. The fourth row will be occupied by Franco Morbidelli, another rider who progressed from Q1, Marco Bezzecchi, and Alex Rins. Rins, who had shown promising pace in the initial stages of Q2, unfortunately encountered a bike issue before exiting the pit box, preventing him from completing a competitive final lap and leaving him to start from P12.
The Q1 session itself was a chaotic affair, seeing several prominent riders eliminated. Initially, Pedro Acosta and Raul Fernandez looked set to advance as the fastest riders. However, after tire changes, the KTM rider Acosta struggled to complete a clean lap, and Trackhouse Aprilia's Fernandez was impacted by a yellow flag caused by Somkiat Chantra's crash, which subsequently canceled his fastest lap. Ultimately, it was Luca Marini and Franco Morbidelli who emerged from the tightly contested Q1 session. Joan Mir narrowly missed out on a Q2 spot by just 0.023 seconds behind Marini, meaning he will start from 13th.
Maverick Vinales also endured a challenging qualifying session, visibly frustrated in the pit box after a chain issue on his KTM. Acosta will begin the race from 14th, Fernandez from 16th, Enea Bastianini from 17th, and Brad Binder from a disappointing 19th position, right behind Bastianini and Vinales. This meant that none of the four factory KTM riders managed to progress to Q2, a surprising outcome for the Austrian manufacturer.
The British Grand Prix at Silverstone is renowned for its high-speed corners and technical sections, demanding absolute precision and bravery from the riders. Quartararo's record-breaking lap not only demonstrated his exceptional skill but also the incredible potential of his Yamaha M1 on this demanding circuit. His ability to extract maximum performance from the bike, particularly on a single flying lap, bodes well for his chances in Sunday's race.
The qualifying results set the stage for an intriguing race. While Quartararo will enjoy the advantage of starting from pole, the close gaps in lap times among the front-runners suggest that the race will be a tight affair. The various tire strategies, coupled with the unpredictable British weather, could also play a crucial role in determining the ultimate winner. Fans can anticipate fierce battles throughout the field as riders jostle for positions, making strategic overtakes, and pushing their machines to the limit.
The pressure will be immense on Quartararo to convert his pole position into a victory, especially with strong contenders like the Marquez brothers, Bagnaia, and other Ducati riders breathing down his neck. The British Grand Prix has a history of delivering thrilling and unpredictable races, and with the current form of the grid, this year's edition promises to be no different. The focus now shifts to the final adjustments and race strategies as teams prepare for the main event, where the true test of skill, endurance, and machine performance will unfold on the hallowed grounds of Silverstone.
