The 2024 MotoGP season has reached a very exciting final stage. Pecco Bagnaia, racer from the Ducati Lenovo team, still has a chance to defend the world title, even though his position in the standings is second. Bagnaia is currently 24 points behind Jorge Martin, who occupies first place. The final series which will be held at the Catalunya Circuit, Barcelona, Spain, on 15-17 November 2024 will be the last chance for Bagnaia to fight.
The Catalunya Circuit was initially not scheduled to hold the 2024 MotoGP closing series. Initially, the season-ending race would be held at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit, Valencia, with the title MotoGP Valencia 2024. However, due to the major flood disaster that hit Valencia due to Hurricane Dana, the race venue had to be moved.
There is only one series remaining in this season, with a maximum total of 37 points that can be achieved by each driver. These points consist of 12 points earned if the racer wins the sprint race, as well as an additional 25 points if they also win the main race. Considering there is only one chance left, calculating the points is very crucial, especially for Bagnaia who must collect enough points to be able to overtake Martin and lock up the 2024 MotoGP title.
To become MotoGP world champion this season, Pecco Bagnaia must ensure that the point difference between himself and Martin is no more than 25 points after the sprint race. This is very important, because if the difference is too big, then the opportunity will be closed before the main race starts.
The main scenario that Bagnaia needs to do is prevent Martin from winning the sprint race. If Martin wins the sprint race, then he will get an additional 12 points, which will bring his total number of points to 497. If in this condition Bagnaia can only finish in second place, he will only get 9 points, so his points will only increase from 461 to 470. With a difference of 27 points, Martin will ensure himself as MotoGP world champion in 2024 without needing to take part in the main race.
However, if Bagnaia manages to win in the sprint race and Martin finishes in second place, Bagnaia will get an additional 12 points, bringing his total points to 473. On the other hand, Martin, who finishes in second place, will get an additional 9 points, bringing his total points to 494. In this scenario, the difference in points between the two will be reduced to 21 points, which means Bagnaia still has a chance to beat Martin in the main race.
In the main race which will be held on Sunday, Bagnaia needs to try hard to secure the top position while hoping that Martin does not finish in pole position. If Bagnaia wins in the main race, he will get an additional 25 points, bringing his total points to 498. To ensure the title, Bagnaia must hope that Martin finishes in the maximum 13th position, which only gives Martin an additional 3 points. In this scenario, Bagnaia will have a total of 498 points, slightly ahead of Martin who will have a total of 497 points.
If both of them have the same number of points at the end of the season, then the championship title will be determined based on the number of wins each driver has achieved throughout the season. Bagnaia is superior in this regard because he has recorded 10 wins, while Martin has only won three wins.
Bagnaia, who has a reputation as a very consistent and aggressive racer on the track, must ensure his best performance in the two races in this final series. Full support from the Ducati team and its racing experience will be the deciding factor in the very tight hunt for the 2024 MotoGP world title. Of course, the luck factor will also play a role in determining the final result.
Now, all eyes are focused on the Catalunya Circuit, which will witness the fight for the 2024 MotoGP world title between Pecco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin. This event will be a highly anticipated spectacle for MotoGP fans around the world.
